EggBug had the privilege of working with the artist Midnight Avila on his new music video ‘I Don’t want to Know’.

We worked closely with the artist to create an original story to compliment the futuristic synth-wave music. A big inspiration for the project was Blade Runner 2049, alongside Cyberpunk and anime themes.

Character designs

Designing the main characters was the first creative challenge we had to tackle, as the focus of the narrative was very much centred around the characters and their relationship with each other.

Creating visually engaging designs that would allow audiences to immediately connect with them was vital, as was deciding which animal sidekick would fit best with the main character. In the end we used the artist and his dog as the main sources of inspiration.

Figuring out the style

A style test was the next step in figuring out the look for the video. We played around with 3D backgrounds and worked to overlay them with 2D characters in a way that captured a cyberpunk feel. It was essential in this step, to establish the feel of the city, as throughout the video it functions as a sort of extra main character for the protagonist to interact with.

Storyboarding

For this project time was an important factor to keep in mind so we wanted to make the story planning phase quick and iterative. After some lively discussion and post it note-sticking we settled on a story we were all happy with (especially the client).

From this point on we built an animatic with which we could use to get an idea of how the pacing would work, after one more check in with the client, we moved swiftly onto modelling the 3D assets.

The Modelling

We decided to use 3D backgrounds for the video, the motive being to try and really capture the futuristic feel of the city whilst allowing for more complicated camera movements to create a more engaging video on a tight deadline.

The Animation

Once we had all the pre-production figured out it was straight onto animation! Through a mix of 2D and 3D we were able to bring the artists vision to life, with happy faces all around.
